# Working in two organizations

> From FilmScorecard Help: https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/working-in-two-organizations

Some people run their own festival **and** help somebody else run theirs —
and some own two organizations outright. If that is you, your account belongs
to two organizations at once, and FilmScorecard has one control for moving
between them: an **Organizations** group inside
[your account menu](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-account-menu.md).

This guide covers when that group appears, what each row does, where a row
takes you, and the handful of things that are kept separately per
organization.

**If you belong to one organization, none of this applies** and nothing on
your screens has changed. See [When the group appears](#when-the-group-appears).

## Finding the switcher

1. Open **your own name** in the top-right corner of any festival or
   organization screen.
2. Directly under your name and email address sits a small heading reading
**ORGANIZATIONS**, and under it one row per organization you belong to.

There is **no organization switcher in the top bar**. The bar's own button
switches *festivals*, and it only ever lists the festivals of the organization
you are currently in — see [Reading a row](#reading-a-row).

## When the group appears

**Only when you are an active member of two or more organizations.** With one,
or none, the group is absent entirely — no heading, no single row naming the
organization you are already in, and no gap where it would be. The menu is
exactly as it is described in [Your account menu](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-account-menu.md).

Three more rules decide what is in the list:

- **A membership that has been suspended is never listed.** You reach nothing
in an organization you are suspended from, so there is no row offering to
take you there. If suspension leaves you with one active membership, the
  whole group disappears with it.
- **An organization FilmScorecard has suspended is never listed either**, for
the same reason: while it is suspended, nobody who works there can open its
  screens. See
  [When your organization is suspended](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/when-your-organization-is-suspended.md).
- **Nothing else narrows the list.** Every active membership is there,
whatever your role in it — including an organization where you are a plain
member with access to a single festival.

## Reading a row

Each row is an organization's name, and there are two kinds:

| Row | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **The organization you are in now** — bold, with a tick on the right | Nothing. Choosing it closes the menu and leaves you exactly where you were. |
| **Any other organization** | Takes you into that organization. See [Where a row takes you](#where-a-row-takes-you). |

The current row is deliberately inert rather than a link back to itself: going
"to" the organization you are already in would reload the screen and could
land you somewhere else inside it, because the row resolves the Overview or a
festival rather than keeping your current page.

**A long organization name is cut off with an ellipsis** rather than wrapping
or widening the menu.

### The order they are in

The list is not alphabetical. It reads:

1. **An organization you own**, first.
2. **Then any where you are an org admin.**
3. **Then the rest.**
4. Within each of those, **the membership you have held longest comes first.**

So two organizations you own are listed in the order you came to own them —
the one you created, or were made owner of, first.

That is the same order FilmScorecard uses to decide which organization to put you
in when you log in, which is the point: **the first row is where signing in
takes you.** See [Which organization you land in](#which-organization-you-land-in).

## Where a row takes you

It depends on how many of that organization's festivals you can open:

- **Two or more** — its [Overview](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/overview.md), the organization's home
page: every festival with a season underway, and the work waiting across
  them.
- **One** — that festival's season dashboard, the
[Season overview](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/season-overview.md), on **the season that festival opens
on**: the one somebody there has **starred**, or its newest season when
nothing is starred (or when the starred one has been archived). The
[Finish setting up](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/finishing-setup.md) strip sits above it while the
  season is still a draft.

**"You can open" is doing real work in that sentence.** It counts your own
access, not the organization's festivals. If your access to somebody else's
organization is a grant on one festival, that is the festival you land on —
never an Overview of festivals you cannot read.

**The star belongs to the festival, not to you.** Whoever runs that
organization chose it, and you land where they pointed. See
[The season a festival opens on](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/the-season-a-festival-opens-on.md).

The address behind the row, if you ever want to bookmark it or send it to a
colleague, is:

```
/org/<organization>
```

It is a signpost rather than a screen: open it and it forwards you, exactly as
the menu row does.

### When there is nothing to land on

Two situations produce no destination — an organization where you can open no
festival at all yet, and one where the only festival you can open has not been
given a season. What happens then depends on your role there:

- **Owners and org admins** land on the **Add a festival** form instead. See
  [Adding a festival](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/adding-a-festival.md).
- **Everybody else gets an ordinary "page not found"**, because there is no
festival there for them to open. Ask whoever runs it for access to a
  festival.

**Two or more festivals always have somewhere to land**: the Overview, even
when none of them has a season yet — it then reads "No festivals with a season
underway." Signing in counts festivals the same way.

### If the address is wrong

`/org/<something>` answers **"page not found"** for an organization that does
not exist, one that is not yours, and one you have been suspended from. All
three look identical on purpose — FilmScorecard never confirms that somebody
else's organization exists.

**One address answers differently:** an organization you are still an active
member of, which FilmScorecard has suspended. That address — and every address
inside it — opens a one-line page instead: "This organization is suspended.
Contact support@filmscorecard.com to resolve it." See
[When your organization is suspended](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/when-your-organization-is-suspended.md).

Signed out, the same address sends you to the log-in screen first.

## Which organization you land in

Logging in does not ask which organization you meant. It picks:

- **an organization you own, ahead of one you merely work in**, and
- **your oldest membership** where that does not settle it.

So a festival director who also coordinates for a friend's organization lands
in **their own** every time, however long ago either membership started, and
the switcher's first row says the same thing. Somebody who owns two lands in
the one they have owned longest. **Inside it, you land on its Overview or on
your one festival**, as [Where a row takes you](#where-a-row-takes-you)
describes.

**An organization FilmScorecard has suspended is skipped**, and you land in the
next one. If every organization you belong to is suspended, you land on the
suspended notice.

**FilmScorecard does not remember where you were last.** Switching organizations
lasts for as long as you keep clicking; the next log-in starts from the rule
above again. **Accepting an invitation is the exception**: it takes you into
the organization that invited you, by the rule in
[Where a row takes you](#where-a-row-takes-you) — see
[Where you land afterwards](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-organization-invitation.md#where-you-land-afterwards).

## Owning two organizations

**One person may own several organizations**, but only one of them can be one
you set up yourself:

- **Creating an organization** — the setup form a new host fills in — is still
**one per person**. An account that already owns an organization, however it
came to own it, cannot create another. See
  [Setting up your festival](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/setting-up-your-festival.md).
- **Being made an owner of another one** is open to anybody: an owner of that
organization can invite you as an **Owner**, or promote you to Owner from
their People list, whether or not you own an organization already. See
  [Your organization invitation](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-organization-invitation.md) and
  [Organization settings](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/organization-settings.md#an-organization-always-keeps-one-owner).

Owning both changes nothing about how they are kept apart. **Each one has its
own payout account**, set up by one of its owners from its own Payments tab;
when you set up the second, Stripe can let you sign in with the same Stripe
login and reuse the details you gave for the first, so both pay into the same
bank without your filling everything in twice. See
[Connecting payouts](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/connecting-payouts.md).

## What is kept per organization

Moving between organizations is a bigger move than switching festivals. These
are separate on each side, and nothing carries across:

- **The festival list in the left navigation, and the order you dragged it
into.** Each organization keeps its own — see
  [Your festivals list](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-festivals-list.md#where-your-order-is-kept-and-where-it-does-not-go).
- **The category and scorecard library**, including which of its categories and
awards a new festival there starts with. It belongs to the organization, not
to you: see [Categories and scorecards](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/categories-and-scorecards.md) and
[What a new festival starts with](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/what-a-new-festival-starts-with.md).
- **The season each festival opens on.** Each organization's festivals carry
  their own stars.
- **Your Overview's seen mark.** **Mark all seen** on one organization's
  [Overview](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/overview.md#changed-counts-and-mark-all-seen) marks nothing in
  the other.
- **Your role, and what you may do.** You can be an owner in one and a
read-only viewer on one festival in the other. Your role line in the top bar
describes **the organization you are looking at**, not the one you own.
- **Organization settings, People and the audit log.** Each organization's are
its own, and you only see the screen at all where you are an owner or an org
  admin. See [Organization settings](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/organization-settings.md).
- **The payout account, the promo codes and the mailing address.** Each
organization is paid into its own account, has its own codes, and sends its
own promo emails from its own name and address. So the amber 1 on
**Organization settings** that asks for a mailing address shows only in an
  organization that has none.

## Who has this

**Festival staff, on festival and organization screens only.** The account
menu — and so the Organizations group — appears on the Overview, the season
dashboard, Submissions, Judges, the library screens and the rest of the
organization's screens.

**Judges do not have it.** A judge's screens carry a different header, and a
judge who judges for several festivals moves between them on their own
[judging home](https://www.filmscorecard.com/help/your-judging-home.md). Being on somebody's judging panel is
not membership of their organization and never puts a row in this list.
